In a move to bolster animal protection measures, the New York State Senate has approved a series of bipartisan bills aimed at fortifying the state’s animal cruelty laws. The legislation, co-sponsored by Senator Pam Helming, comes during April, which is recognized as Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.
Senator Helming expressed her commitment to safeguarding animals and holding wrongdoers accountable, stating, "Whether it’s protecting our pets or our people, I’ll always fight for common sense laws that hold criminals accountable and deter crime."
Among the key bills passed are S.761, which eliminates the term “serious” from the definition of aggravated cruelty to animals, broadening the scope of punishable offenses. Additionally, S.3431A introduces new criminal offenses pertaining to animal fighting, while S.5325 grants judges the discretion to impose consecutive or concurrent sentences for individuals convicted of multiple counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.
The Senate's proactive stance on enhancing animal welfare laws underscores a commitment to ensuring the well-being and safety of all creatures within the state.
