Martha E. Pollack, the 14th president of Cornell University, recently shared insights on international ties, student diversity, and fostering a welcoming environment for students in an email interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily.

Pollack emphasized the value that international students bring to Cornell's campus, stating, "Cornell’s international students and scholars bring global cultures, diverse perspectives, and immense intellectual energy to campus." She highlighted the university's commitment to creating a community of belonging where individuals from various backgrounds can learn and work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and friendship.

Addressing the impact of decreasing Chinese student enrollment in the United States, Pollack noted that at Cornell, the number of Chinese students has remained consistent across undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. She acknowledged the significant role played by Chinese and Korean students in fostering a diverse scholarly community at Cornell.

Pollack also discussed the support systems in place for international students at Cornell, emphasizing the university's initiatives to help students adjust academically and socially. Programs like "Prepare" provide new international undergraduates with early access to campus resources and connections with fellow students.

Regarding safety and inclusivity on campus, Pollack addressed the challenges faced by students amid global conflicts, such as the Israel-Hamas war. She highlighted the peaceful demonstrations and events organized by students to express their opinions while ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all community members.

Pollack further highlighted the popularity of Korea as a study destination for Cornell students, citing cultural experiences, academic partnerships, and the success of alumni entrepreneurs in the region. She also discussed Cornell's diverse academic offerings and the university's emphasis on interdisciplinary studies to prepare students for a range of career paths.

As Cornell continues to prioritize global engagement and student diversity, Pollack's insights shed light on the university's commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of its community.
