Pierre Attiogbe, a junior from Cornell Big Red, competed on March 14 in the men’s mile semifinal at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Attiogbe led much of his heat but finished sixth with a time of 3:57.84, placing him 12th overall and just outside qualification for the final.
The result concluded a strong indoor season for Attiogbe, who earlier set an Ivy League record in the mile. His performance at the national meet marked his first appearance at this level and earned him second-team All-America honors.
Cornell assistant coach Mike Henderson said after the race, “It’s always tough right after a race that doesn’t go exactly the way you wanted to give an objective reflection. But overall there is a lot to be proud of with the way he competed today.”
Henderson described Attiogbe’s decision-making during the race: “When he saw the first heat went at a fairly honest pace, he had to decide how he was going to run his race. He showed a lot of courage when he chose to go to the front to try and control things a little more. He just came up less than half a second short of the goal of advancing to the finals.” Only four runners from each heat plus two fastest times advanced.
Reflecting on Attiogbe’s approach, Henderson said, “For someone in their first NCAA Championship to take the lead early when the pace was lagging shows a lot of courage. It shows that the stage isn’t too big for him.” Henderson also noted, “His poise under pressure and competitive spirit make it easy to forget that he’s only 20 years old. He walks away with a better understanding of what he has to do next time around.”
Looking ahead, Henderson said, “We’ll get him recovered and ready for an even better outdoor season. He’s definitely walking away from this one hungry for more.”
