Ellie Bergin scored a natural hat trick and Ella Wilmot contributed two goals and four assists as Cornell defeated Columbia 12-6 at Schoellkopf Field on March 21.
The victory improves Cornell’s record to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in Ivy League play. The team established an early lead, building a 4-1 advantage by the end of the first quarter and maintaining control throughout the game.
Emily Iacobellis opened the scoring for Cornell, followed by Kathleen Michaud. After Columbia’s Cordelia Flemming narrowed the gap, Lexie Tully and Bergin responded with goals to close out the first quarter. Bergin continued her strong performance by completing a natural hat trick, with all three goals assisted by Wilmot. Lilly Whaling added another goal as Cornell went on a five-goal run, leading 7-2 at halftime.
Columbia attempted a comeback in the third quarter with goals from Emma Row and Anna Becker, but Cornell maintained its lead. In the fourth quarter, Wilmot and Tully each scored again, while Whaling converted a power play opportunity off another Wilmot assist. Michaud closed out the scoring late in the game.
Wilmot led Cornell’s offense with two goals and four assists. Bergin finished with three goals, Michaud had two—including the final tally—while Tully and Whaling each contributed two goals. Iacobellis also scored for Cornell. Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Clark made seven saves on twenty shots for Cornell, while Ava Kimche recorded five saves for Columbia.
Cornell outshot Columbia 28-20 overall and held a 17-13 edge in shots on goal. The Big Red also collected more ground balls than their opponent, winning that battle 16-13.
Looking ahead, Cornell will host Dartmouth on Saturday, March 28 at noon. Dartmouth leads the all-time series between the teams, holding a record of thirty-four wins to twelve.
