Licensed practical nurse Briona McBride of The Mary Clark Thompson Family Practice in Canandaigua received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses from UR Medicine Thompson Health on April 1.

The award recognizes nurses who provide exceptional care and make a difference in patients’ lives. It is part of an international program that honors nurses for their compassion and dedication.

McBride, who lives in Palmyra, was surprised with the award while at work by a group of health system executives and nursing administrators. Patient Tamra Clark of Canandaigua, who nominated McBride, attended the presentation. Clark said McBride has been “my advocate from day one,” especially in helping ensure medications for an autoimmune disease were covered by insurance. “I am beyond appreciative of the time she has taken to help me,” Clark said. She added that she could not imagine going through the process with another nurse.

During the March 25 ceremony, McBride received a certificate, a pin, and a hand-carved sculpture called A Healer’s Touch. As part of her recognition as a DAISY recipient, she also becomes eligible for scholarships, discounts on certifications, and medical mission grants from The DAISY Foundation.

The recognition highlights ongoing efforts to acknowledge outstanding nursing professionals within local healthcare organizations.
