The Cornell women’s outdoor track and field team competed on April 11 at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic, where senior Mairead Clas finished second in the invitational 1,500 meters with a personal-best time of 4:24.41.
Clas’ performance marked an early highlight for Cornell in the outdoor season. The result was described as a strong step forward by the coaching staff.
“Mairead’s runner-up finish in the invite 1500m was an exciting step forward toward her season goals,” assistant coach Kayla Evans said. “The objective today was to be patient off the line and compete from a tactical position. She handled the early shuffling well that occurs in big races, then maintained her space in the top group leading up to the bell lap. Mairead closed hard to cover a move by the leader, charging in the final 100 meters to hold off the pack. We’re walking away having learned valuable lessons, banking a 1500m personal best, and hungry to get back out there again.”
In other results from Bucknell, sophomore Lucia Werner led Cornell runners in the invitational 5,000 meters with a time of 17:13.91 for 42nd place. Junior Emma O’Day finished in 76th place (17:43.01), while freshman Evelyn Prodoehl placed 78th (17:45.05).
Cornell’s outdoor campaign will continue as more athletes are set to compete during day two of the Big Red Invitational, which is also Cornell’s only home meet this season.
