The Cornell softball team lost to Columbia 7-1 in the opening game of their series on April 17 at Niemand-Robison Field. With this result, Cornell’s season record moved to 17-19, while Columbia improved to 16-17.
The outcome is significant for both teams as they continue their seasons and compete for better standings. The match highlighted early pitching struggles and key moments that allowed Columbia to secure the win.
Cornell pitcher Madalyn Covelli pitched for just over an inning, allowing two earned runs with three walks and five wild pitches. Emma Harshberger took over and was able to stabilize the game temporarily but eventually gave up more runs as Columbia pulled ahead later in the contest.
Columbia scored its first run in the opening inning after Covelli threw three consecutive wild pitches, allowing Nguyen to score. Another sequence of wild pitches in the second inning led to a second run for Columbia. In the fifth inning, Mikami hit a home run for Columbia, extending their lead to 3-0. Cornell responded with a sacrifice fly from Hernandez that brought Tarisa Frans home, narrowing the gap briefly.
However, Columbia increased its advantage late in the game with Mason hitting an RBI triple and Hubble sealing victory with a three-run homer in the seventh inning.
Looking ahead, Cornell will play a doubleheader against Columbia on Saturday at Niemand-Robison Field with games scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., both available on ESPN+.
