The Cornell women’s tennis team lost to No. 68 Columbia by a score of 4-2 on March 28 in New York, during the Ivy League opener for both teams. The match took place at the Milstein Family Tennis Center, with Columbia improving its record to 11-3 (1-0 Ivy) and Cornell falling to 7-7 (0-1 Ivy).
This result marks Columbia’s fifth consecutive win, while Cornell was unable to overcome an early deficit despite victories from Sage Loudon and Victoria Zhao in singles play. The outcome is significant as it sets the tone for both teams’ conference campaigns.
Columbia secured the doubles point with wins at positions two and three, although Cornell’s top duo of Michelle Ryndin and Sage Loudon claimed a victory at No. 1 doubles. In singles matches, Loudon won convincingly at No. 2, and Zhao followed with a straight-set win at No. 3 for Cornell. However, Columbia regained control through Gayathri Krishnan’s win over Ryndin at No. 1 singles and Amber Yin’s victory against Emma Baker at No. 6.
The contest was decided when Michelle Li of Columbia rallied past Dylan Gelber in three sets at No. 4 singles, clinching the match for the Lions before the final contest between Andrea Martinez de los Rios and Margaret Hui was left unfinished with their third set tied.
Cornell will return home to Ithaca for a three-match homestand against Yale and Brown on April 4 and April 5; both matches are scheduled for broadcast on Stretch Internet.
