Cornell advanced three wrestlers to the quarterfinals and kept five competitors in contention after the first day of the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Wrestling Championships, according to a March 19 report.
The tournament, held at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, saw Cornell’s team demonstrate both strength and resilience. The Big Red started strong in Session I, with all five wrestlers winning their opening matches and moving into the evening round. By the end of Thursday, four remained in contention for podium finishes.
Tyler Ferrara began at 133 pounds with a 6-2 decision over Zach Redding from North Carolina State. Vince Cornella followed at 141 pounds by controlling his match against Virginia’s Gable Porter for an 8-0 major decision. Jaxon Joy delivered a dominant performance at 149 pounds, securing a technical fall over Edinboro’s Ryan Michaels. Meyer Shapiro continued the momentum at 157 pounds with a major decision against North Carolina’s Laird Root, while Simon Ruiz capped off Session I with a technical fall over Arizona State’s Cael Valencia at 174 pounds.
After Session I, Cornell was in fifth place with ten team points. In Session II, Ferrara lost by technical fall to Iowa’s Drake Ayala and moved into the consolation bracket. Cornella advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Penn’s CJ Composto for the fourth time this season. Joy won his second match against Iowa’s Ryder Block, and Shapiro edged out Virginia Tech’s Ethen Miller. Ruiz suffered his first loss of the season to Navy’s Danny Wask but remains in contention through the consolation rounds.
By day’s end, Cornell stood ninth overall with fourteen team points and multiple athletes still vying for All-American honors and podium spots. The competition continues Friday with quarterfinals and additional consolation matches scheduled throughout the day.
