Cornell University’s baseball team defeated Dartmouth College 8-1 on April 3 at Booth Field, opening a three-game Ivy League series with a decisive win.
The victory is significant for Cornell as it marks the team’s fourth consecutive home win over Dartmouth and narrows the all-time series gap between the two teams. The result also extends the trend of home teams winning in this matchup.
Senior second baseman TJ Swidorski led Cornell’s offense, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Freshman first baseman Jayden Shin hit his first collegiate home run to cap a four-run second inning. Junior shortstop Kevin Hager extended his hitting streak to six games and stole two bases during the contest. All nine starters for Cornell recorded at least one hit, contributing to a total of 14 hits for the team.
On the mound, junior left-handed pitcher Huxley Holcombe delivered his second straight quality start by allowing just one run on four hits over six innings while striking out four batters. Freshman right-hander Ross Yoshida closed out the game with three scoreless innings and earned his first collegiate save.
The Big Red took an early lead by scoring six unanswered runs across the first three innings against Dartmouth starter Marco Dumsky, who was removed from play after giving up seven hits and six runs in less than three innings. Alejandro Puig put Dartmouth on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, but Swidorski responded with a two-run double that secured Cornell’s lead.
Looking ahead, Cornell and Dartmouth are scheduled to continue their series with a doubleheader at Booth Field on April 4 beginning at 11:30 a.m., with both games available via live stream.
