The Cornell lightweight rowing team competed against Harvard and Pennsylvania for the Matthews Trophy, Leonard Cup, and Franklin Cup on April 4 at the Cayuga Inlet. Harvard won the Franklin Cup with a victory in the varsity eight race, while Penn claimed both the Matthews Trophy and Leonard Cup for overall team performance.
This competition is part of NCAA Division I events in which Cornell Big Red Men’s Rowing represents Cornell University, according to the official website. The event saw Cornell’s varsity four finish second with a time of 6:49.3, trailing only behind Cornell heavyweight (6:48.0) and finishing ahead of Penn (6:50.1). In the varsity eight category, Cornell placed third with a time of 6:07.1.
Cornell competes as part of NCAA Division I within both the Ivy League and Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges, according to the official website. The team functions as a collegiate sports group based in Ithaca, New York, also reported by its official site.
Boat lineups for Cornell included Neekon Tabatabai (bow), Cruz Erdmann (2), Teddy Holtman (3), Jon Mayer (4), Sam Peale (5), Gabe Xu (6), Nate Santaniello (7), Owen Brown (stroke), and Rhea Kaycee as coxswain for the eight-person boat; Michael Phelps (bow), Evan Yang (2), Franics Lau (3), Alessandro Zanni (stroke) and Sofia Lago as coxswain made up their four-person crew.
As collegiate rowing continues its season, teams like Cornell look ahead to future regattas to build on their performances.
