Cornell University’s men’s lacrosse team achieved a 19-8 win over Hobart on Tuesday at Schoellkopf Field, advancing their season record to 3-0. Junior Willem Firth led the team with four goals and four assists, marking his highest-scoring game of the season.
Cornell started strong by scoring four consecutive goals and maintained control throughout the match. By halftime, the Big Red had established a substantial lead of 12-3. The offensive effort was spread across the roster, with senior Bowie Horsman scoring three goals, junior Ryan Goldstein adding two goals and an assist, junior Ryan Waldman netting two goals, and junior Jaden Ciappara contributing two goals and an assist. In total, 11 Cornell players scored in the game.
At faceoff, senior Jack Cascadden won 12 out of 18 opportunities while sophomore Michael Melkonian added eight wins from 11 attempts. This gave Cornell a significant advantage in possession.
Junior goalkeeper Matthew Tully made seven saves before being substituted by Tim Piacentini for the final minutes.
Tuesday’s game marked the 143rd meeting between Cornell and Hobart. With this result, Cornell now holds a record of 92 wins, 47 losses, and four draws against Hobart. The team also set new season-highs for points (30), goals (19), assists (11), shots on goal (27), and tied its best performance for caused turnovers with six. Firth’s eight-point performance is currently unmatched by any other player on the team this season. Melkonian also achieved a personal best with seven ground balls.
Cornell is scheduled to play No. 3 Richmond next at Schoellkopf Field on Saturday at noon. The upcoming matchup will be broadcast on ESPN+. Historically, Cornell leads its series against Richmond with two wins and no losses.
