Cornell University’s men’s lacrosse team defeated the University of Pennsylvania 16-8 at Franklin Field on April 4, earning its first win in Philadelphia since the 2018 season.

The victory is significant as it improves Cornell’s overall record to 6-3 and its Ivy League record to 3-1. The win also marks Cornell’s continued lead in the all-time series against Penn, now standing at 69 wins, 29 losses, and three draws after their 101st meeting.

The game was tied at four goals each with just over nine minutes left in the second quarter before Cornell launched decisive scoring runs of four and five consecutive goals. Brian Luzzi started the run by converting a man-up opportunity. Luzzi went on to score again during this stretch, joined by Rowyn Nurry and Ryan Goldstein. After a brief response from Penn, Ryan Waldman pushed Cornell’s lead further before halftime. In the third quarter, Cornell held Penn scoreless while extending its advantage with additional goals from Waldman, Goldstein, and Luzzi.

Willem Firth led Cornell’s offense with four goals and one assist. Luzzi contributed three goals and two assists for five points total. Goldstein added two goals and two assists while Waldman finished with three goals. Jack Cascadden controlled possession by winning fifteen out of twenty-two faceoffs.

Goalkeeper Matthew Tully made eleven saves during the match, limiting Penn’s Griffin Scane to three goals and holding Davis Provost—who entered as the league leader in scoring—to just one goal.

Looking ahead, Cornell will play Duke University on Long Island on April 11 in what will be their tenth meeting overall and first since 2013.
