Cornell University reported on March 28 that its men’s lacrosse team lost a close game to Yale, with a final score of 13-12 at Schoellkopf Field. The defeat dropped Cornell’s record to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in Ivy League play.
The game was significant as it marked the first Ivy League regular-season loss for Cornell since the 2024 season. Both teams competed closely, but Peter Moynihan scored four goals for Yale, including the go-ahead goal with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter. Despite late efforts from Cornell, including a goal by Luke Robinson with just 21 seconds remaining, they were unable to tie the game before time expired.
Brian Luzzi led Cornell’s offense by matching his career high with four unassisted goals on six shots. Willem Firth contributed four goals and an assist, while Michael Melkonian won 19 of 29 faceoffs. However, Yale goalkeeper Ben Friedman made several key saves in the final quarter, finishing with a total of 20 saves.
Yale’s win snapped a three-game losing streak against Cornell and was their first victory in Ithaca since the 2018 season. The match also marked the teams’ 89th meeting all-time, with Cornell still leading the series.
Looking ahead, Cornell is scheduled to play Penn in Philadelphia on April 4 for their next Ivy League matchup.
