The Cornell men’s polo team secured a 21-8 victory over Virginia Tech at the Oxley Equestrian Center in Ithaca, New York. With this win, Cornell improved its season record to 10-1 and remains strong at home with a 6-1 record.
Cornell took an early lead, ending the first chukker ahead 5-1 and extending their advantage to 13-4 by halftime. The team maintained control throughout the match, reaching a 20-4 score in the fourth chukker before Virginia Tech added four late goals. Max Sponer led Cornell with nine goals, seven of which came in the first half. Dylan Tung and Malachi Light each contributed six goals.
“This was a good game for us as we prepare to head to Nationals,” said Anthony Condo Jr., the Peter B. Orthwein `68 Head Coach of Polo. “It gave our starters some good minutes but also allowed for us to substitute some and get some valuable playing time for our rostered players. Next week will be a real big test for us as we host Kentucky and play them for the first time this year.”
Cornell is set to face Kentucky on Friday, March 6 at Oxley Equestrian Center.
The Cornell Big Red Polo team participates in NCAA varsity polo through its affiliation with Cornell University and the United States Polo Association. The program focuses on equestrian competition and operates out of Ithaca, New York.
