The Cornell men’s squash team, seeded 10th, was defeated by seventh-seeded Drexel with a score of 7-2 in the opening round of the Potter Cup at the CSA National Team Championships in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Cornell freshman Edward Thng extended his match against Drexel’s Charlie Taylor to five games at the No. 6 position before losing 6-11, 5-11, 17-15, 11-5, 12-10. This was the only match that went to five games. Sophomore Vivaan Shah and freshman Ethan Jain each managed to win a game at Nos. 8 and 9 but were ultimately defeated in four games.

Cornell’s two victories came from junior Syan Singh and freshman Aly Ezzat. Singh secured a straight-games win over Nicolas Serna at No. 1 (11-7, 11-9, 11-6), while Ezzat also won in three games against Youssef Bastawy at No. 3 (11-3, 11-9, 11-7).

Drexel dominated the other matches as Guido Lindner (No. 2), Yuri Pelbart (No. 4), Luhann Goenewald (No. 5), and Thiago Cabrejos (No. 7) all won their contests in straight games. Lindner’s victory ended Cornell sophomore Youssef Sarhan’s three-match winning streak.

At No. 8, Tavneet Mundra recovered after dropping the first game to Shah and won the next three.

Cornell will now move on to face Tufts in the Potter Cup first consolation semifinals on Friday morning. The Big Red previously beat Tufts earlier this season for its twelfth consecutive win over them; Tufts last defeated Cornell in their initial meeting in January of 1981.

Friday’s match will be the second consecutive year that Cornell and Tufts meet during the CSA National Team Championships.
