The Cornell men’s tennis team lost its Ivy League opener to Yale on April 4, ending a winning streak with a 4-2 defeat at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. The match saw Cornell, ranked No. 30 nationally, slip to a record of 12-3 overall and 0-1 in Ivy League play, while No. 39 Yale improved to 15-5 and remained undefeated in conference competition.
This result is significant as it marks the first conference setback for Cornell this season and demonstrates the competitiveness within the Ivy League. Both teams entered the match with strong records, but Yale’s performance secured them an early advantage in league standings.
Yale claimed the doubles point after victories at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Vignesh Gogineni and Edward Liao defeated Eric Verdes and Rodrigo Fernandes decisively at the top spot (6-1), while Jason Shuler and Dylan Tsoi narrowly overcame Rushil Khosla and Rethin Pranav Senthil Kumar (7-6) at No. 2 doubles. Cornell’s Felipe Pinzon and Petar Teodorovic earned a win at No. 3 doubles (6-4).
In singles play, Yale extended its lead through straight-set wins by Gogineni over Fernandes (6-1, 6-2) at No.1 singles and Liao over Verdes (6-4, 6-3) at No.2 singles positions. Cornell narrowed the deficit with victories from Senthil Kumar against Jim Ji (6-0, 6-2) at No.5 singles and Pinzon against Eric Li (6-4, 7-6) at No.4 singles.
The deciding point came when Shuler of Yale rallied past Teodorovic in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) at No.3 singles to clinch the match for his team; play was suspended for the remaining contest.
Looking ahead, Cornell will seek to even its Ivy record when it faces Brown on Sunday afternoon in Providence.
