The Cornell men’s outdoor track and field team delivered a solid performance on April 12 during the second day of the Big Red Invitational at Kane Sports Complex, its only home meet of the season.
The event gave Cornell athletes an opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd and test their progress midway through the outdoor season. The team showed depth across both track and field events, with several athletes achieving personal bests and top finishes.
Distance runners led off with Colin Martens winning the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 6:08.99. Matthew O’Brien secured first place in the 1,500 meters, while Ryan Johnson finished third. In hurdles, Ryder King placed second in the 110-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time of 13.87 before returning to win the 400-meter hurdles in 52.07. “Ryder King had a big day, running a very strong wind-aided 13.87 in the 110 hurdles, then coming back to win the 400 hurdles in 52.0,” head coach Adrian Durant said.
Sprinter Panashe Nhenga placed second in the 100 meters (10.32) and won the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 21.28 seconds—earning him entry into Cornell’s all-time top ten for that event. “Panashe Nhenga was sharp as well, running a wind-aided 10.32 in the 100 and then a lifetime best of 21.28 in the 200, which moves him to No.10 all-time at Cornell,” Durant said.
In field events, Joe Seib won both shot put (17.79m) and discus (49.93m), while Nicholas Frattina set his first personal record since two years ago with his fifth-place finish (15.91m). Associate head coach Kevin Phipps said: “It means a lot to see a kid like Nick PR after two years. It shows that hard work really pays off; I’m proud of him.” Other highlights included Joseph Rachiele winning javelin (51.57m) and Aidan Kerr taking first place in open hammer throw (50.91m).
Head coach Adrian Durant reflected on conditions by saying: “Despite temps in the ’50s for most of the day,we had some excellent performances.” He added: “Overall,a lot of strong performances for a low-key Sunday meet here in Ithaca.” The team is scheduled to compete next at Navy Invite on April17-18.
