The Cornell sailing team placed seventh at the America Trophy, the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Open Fleet Race Championship, according to an April 19 announcement. The event took place on the St. Mary’s River and featured a competitive field of 18 teams.
The results determine which teams qualify for the national championships, making this regatta significant for all participants. Penn and Navy secured the conference’s automatic bids to nationals after their performances in the event.
Cornell finished with a total of 212 points over 14 races in each division during the two-day regatta. The A Division team—Sophia Devling, Marcus Greco, Sophia Mulvania, and Emil Damji—finished seventh overall with 100 points. The B Division pair of Ava Gustafson and Grace Penque placed ninth with 112 points. Notably, Devling and Mulvania won an A Division race early in the competition.
Throughout the weekend, Cornell remained in contention near the middle of the standings after opening with a sixth-place combined score through two rotations. Competition was close among several teams; only 26 points separated third through sixth place.
Although Cornell did not secure one of MAISA’s two qualifying spots for nationals at this event, they will look toward an at-large bid that could allow them to compete at Open Nationals for a third consecutive year. The Big Red is set to begin Women’s Team Race Nationals on Sunday, April 26 in New Orleans while other members prepare for Kings Point’s Admirals Trophy starting Saturday.
