The Cornell softball team defeated Yale 13-1 on March 15 in the Ivy League series finale at 5K Corral Field. The game ended after five innings due to the run rule, with Cornell taking an early lead and maintaining control throughout.
This win is significant as it marks a strong start for Cornell in their Ivy League campaign, showcasing both offensive power and pitching depth.
Emma Harshberger led Cornell’s offense, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and five RBIs. She hit a three-run home run in the first inning and added a two-run single in the fifth. Charlize Cai contributed three hits and scored twice, while Tarisa Frans had two hits and two RBIs. Overall, Cornell recorded 11 hits and 11 RBIs during the game.
Pitcher Madalyn Covelli earned the win by throwing a complete five-inning game, allowing just one run on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Covelli kept Yale scoreless through the first three innings and limited their scoring opportunities by inducing eight groundouts.
Cornell set the tone early when Harshberger’s home run brought home Lauren Holt and Cai for a quick lead. The second inning saw additional runs from errors, doubles, sacrifice flies, and another home run by Hailey Pirkey. Yale managed to score once in the fourth inning but could not close the gap further.
Looking ahead, Cornell will play Bucknell in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 18 at Niemand-Robison Field. The games are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., with broadcasts available on ESPN+.
