The Cornell sailing team won the MAISA Spring Women’s Fleet Race Championship on Mar. 29, finishing ahead of Georgetown in a field of 15 teams at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The Big Red ended with a total of 98 points, narrowly surpassing the Hoyas, who finished with 101 points.
This championship is significant as it highlights Cornell’s depth and consistency across both divisions during a weekend marked by changing weather conditions. Their victory demonstrates strong performance under pressure and secures their standing within the conference.
In A Division, Winborne Majette sailed alongside Anna Iacobucci and Maya Conway to achieve 59 points, including two race wins and frequent top-five finishes. In B Division, Sophia Devling and Paulina Freyre recorded three race victories and were outside the top three only four times in fourteen races, totaling 39 points. After leading on day one, Cornell managed to hold off Georgetown’s late challenge as wind conditions shifted from cold northerlies to a stronger southerly breeze on Sunday.
Cornell also participated in the Dellenbaugh Women’s Team Race Trophy over the weekend, where they finished twelfth with a record of four wins and twelve losses against national competition. Skippers Ava Gustafson, Gilda Dondona, Adrianna D’Agati and crews Grace Penque, Maeve Katics, Laine Reshefsky and Kate Constan secured victories over MIT, Bowdoin, Dartmouth and Charleston while gaining experience against highly ranked teams.
Looking ahead, Cornell will host the Prosser Team Race Championship on April 4-5 at Cayuga Lake from the Merrill Family Sailing Center. Additionally, another group of sailors will compete for the Owen Trophy at Boston University.
