The Cornell Big Red wrestling team secured its second consecutive Ivy League Wrestling Championship on Sunday at Columbia University’s Levien Gym. The team, led by head coach Mike Grey, scored 132.5 points to finish ahead of host Columbia (118 points) and the University of Pennsylvania (116.5 points).
Cornell produced four individual champions: sophomore Tyler Ferrara at 133 pounds, junior Vince Cornella at 141 pounds, freshman Jaxon Joy at 149 pounds, and junior Simon Ruiz at 174 pounds. Ruiz won his second straight Ivy League title in his weight class with an 8-2 decision over Nick Fine of Columbia.
Ferrara delivered a strong performance in the finals with a 12-2 major decision against Evan Mougalian of Penn. At 141 pounds, Cornella defeated two-time All-American CJ Composto from Penn by a score of 5-3—his third win over Composto this season. Joy earned the title at 149 pounds with a disciplined 2-0 victory over Cross Wasilewski of Penn.
Cornell also had runner-up finishes from junior Meyer Shapiro (157 pounds) and freshman Louie Cerchio (184 pounds). Cerchio’s result was notable as he competed up a weight class after spending much of the season at 165 pounds.
Other podium finishes included heavyweight Ashton Davis placing third after securing a first-period pin. Greg Diakomihalis (125) and Aiden Hanning (197) both finished fourth in their respective brackets.
With this win, Cornell repeats as Ivy League champions in only the second year since the conference established its standalone wrestling tournament.
Five Cornell wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships: Ferrara, Cornella, Joy, Shapiro, and Ruiz.
