Cornell Big Red women’s lacrosse defeated Boston University Terriers 12-6 on March 17 in Boston, led by a strong first half and balanced play on both offense and defense.
The win is significant as it improves Cornell’s record to 5-3 and demonstrates the team’s ability to control games both offensively and defensively. The victory also sets the stage for their upcoming Ivy League matchup.
Ellie Bergin scored four goals, including a hat trick in the first half, while Ella Wilmot contributed three assists. Emily Iacobellis added two goals and an assist, and Lilly Whaling finished with two goals and one assist. Defensively, Caitlin Tully led with four ground balls, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Mackenzie Clark recorded a .455 save percentage in goal. Cornell outshot Boston University 32-14, held a 21-6 advantage in shots on goal, collected more ground balls (25-12), forced more turnovers (19-7), and converted 22 of 25 clear attempts.
The game began with Bergin scoring just 30 seconds after the opening draw. By halftime, Cornell had built a commanding 7-0 lead. In the second half, Lexie Tully extended the lead before Boston University responded with two goals. However, Cornell maintained control through additional scores from Whaling and Iacobellis.
Team leaders so far this season include Bergin with 18 goals, Iacobellis and Whaling each with 11 goals, Michaud with 10 goals, Patten with eight goals; Wilmot leads in assists with ten; Tully leads in ground balls (19), caused turnovers (16), and draw controls (25).
Looking ahead, Cornell will host Columbia for their second Ivy League matchup of the season on Saturday, March 21 at noon. The game will be livestreamed on ESPN+.
