Cornell University’s women’s lacrosse team lost its Ivy League opener to Brown University on Saturday, with a final score of 10-6 in Providence, Rhode Island.
The game began with Cornell taking an early lead when Emily Iacobellis scored her sixth goal of the season. Brown responded late in the first quarter to tie the game at 1-1. Early in the second quarter, Brown took the lead, but Cornell’s Ellie Bergin equalized with her 12th goal of the season, assisted by Iacobellis. Before halftime, Brown scored again and led 3-2 at the break.
At halftime, Brown led in draw controls and ground balls, while Cornell had more shots on goal. In the third quarter, Brown extended its advantage by scoring four consecutive goals and keeping Cornell scoreless for that period.
In the fourth quarter, Cornell tried to come back with two goals from Lily Whaling and another from Bergin. Iacobellis added a second goal as well. However, Brown maintained its lead to secure the win.
Bergin, Whaling, and Iacobellis each scored twice for Cornell. The Big Red outperformed Brown in shots on goal (13-11), caused turnovers (9-5), and committed fewer turnovers (11 compared to Brown’s 19). Despite these efforts, Brown led key possession statistics such as draw controls (10-8), ground balls (20-17), and assisted goals (9-4).
Cornell now holds a record of 3 wins and 3 losses this season.
The team is scheduled to play St. Bonaventure at home on Wednesday, March 11 at Schoellkopf Field. The game will begin at 3 p.m.
