Cornell lost a close game to Syracuse by a score of 10-8 on March 31 at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca. The match, which started later than planned due to storms, featured four lead changes and was the closest meeting between the teams since 2016.
The game was marked by strong efforts from both sides. Cornell opened the scoring with Lexie Tully’s goal, assisted by Emily Iacobellis. Syracuse quickly answered and took its first lead before Lilly Whaling tied it up again for Cornell. Emily Iacobellis then put Cornell ahead late in the first quarter, but Syracuse responded to tie it at three goals each heading into the second quarter.
Cornell gained momentum early in the second quarter with unassisted goals from Kathleen Michaud and Ellie Bornhoeft, building a two-goal advantage. Despite this push, Syracuse rallied before halftime to tie the score at six apiece. In the third quarter, Syracuse pulled ahead with three consecutive goals, including two free-position shots from Joely Caramelli and Bri Peters.
Cornell attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter as Ellie Bergin scored off an assist from Wilmot and Tully added another goal late in the game. However, time ran out as Syracuse maintained its lead for a narrow victory.
Michaud and Tully led Cornell with two goals each while Iacobellis, Whaling, Bornhoeft, and Bergin also contributed goals. Wilmot provided two assists for Cornell’s eight total goals. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Clark made eight saves during her time on the field as Cornell kept pace despite being outshot by Syracuse.
Looking ahead, Cornell will travel to Princeton for an Ivy League matchup against Princeton University on Saturday, April 4.
