Cornell University’s women’s basketball team ended its season with a 78-53 win over Dartmouth at Newman Arena on Saturday. Clarke Jackson led the team with 20 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, while four other players also scored in double figures.
Audrey Chen contributed 12 points, Emily Pape had 11, and both Rachel Kaus and Paige Engels added 10 each. Cornell shot 55 percent from the field and outscored Dartmouth in every quarter, leading by 11 at halftime.
Chen made all four of her three-point attempts in the third quarter, helping Cornell extend its lead. “Her back-to-back triples at the 9:13 and 8:21 marks pushed the lead to 15, and she added two more in the frame to help Cornell outscore Dartmouth 21-17 in the period and take a 56-41 advantage into the fourth.”
The bench played a significant role, scoring 40 points compared to Dartmouth’s reserves’ 15. Engels finished with six assists, while Kelsey Langston also had six assists as Cornell totaled 25 assists on their 33 field goals.
Defensively, Cornell held Dartmouth to under 36 percent shooting and forced them into committing 16 turnovers. Alexandra Eldredge led Dartmouth with 12 points.
Before the game, seniors Emily Pape and Vivienne Knee were recognized for their contributions. Pape recorded a double-digit scoring performance for her final home game and finished her career as “the only player in program history with at least 1,100 points, 600 rebounds, and 110 made threes.” Knee collected seven rebounds off the bench.
Saturday’s game was the teams’ ninety-third meeting; Cornell improved its record against Dartmouth to thirty wins in sixty-three losses. The Big Red has now won four straight games against Dartmouth.
The victory brings Cornell’s season record to nine wins and eighteen losses overall, including four wins in Ivy League play out of fourteen games. The team is part of Cornell University’s intercollegiate athletics program based in Ithaca, New York. They compete within the Ivy League conference and have previously secured Ivy League championships in both 2008 and 2014.
