Cornell University’s women’s lacrosse team began its 2026 season with a loss to the University of Colorado, ending the game 8-5 on Saturday at Kittredge Field in Boulder. Despite trailing 5-1 at halftime, Cornell managed a late rally that brought them within two goals in the fourth quarter.

The Big Red’s first goal came in the second quarter when Emily Iacobellis scored with an assist from Lexie Tully. Lilly Whaling added another early in the third quarter after receiving a pass from Ellie Bornhoeft, narrowing Colorado’s lead to 5-2.

In the fourth quarter, Cornell mounted its strongest effort. Ellie Bergin scored off an assist from Whaling to start the period, making it 6-3. Shortly after, Tully found the net again to close the gap to 6-4. Following a response from Colorado, Kathleen Michaud added Cornell’s final goal with just over a minute left in regulation.

Goalkeeper Maren Clark made seven saves during her full-game appearance.

Colorado outshot Cornell 26-12 and forced 21 turnovers by the Big Red. However, Cornell controlled nine draws and successfully completed 17 of their 19 clear attempts as they continued to compete until the end.

Cornell will play next against UC Davis on Tuesday at a neutral site hosted by Colorado. The game is set for 1 p.m. ET and will be available for viewing on ESPN+.
