The Cornell women’s indoor track and field team had a successful showing at the Southern Tier Invite held Saturday at Barton Hall in Ithaca, New York. The event featured strong performances from athletes across all event groups, including two school records.
Junior Avery Hilliard set a new school record in the pole vault, clearing 12.07 meters to win the event and surpassing the previous mark by one centimeter. “Junior Avery Hilliard headlined the day in the pole vault, clearing a school-record height by one centimeter to claim the event win and etch her name atop Cornell’s all-time list (at 12.07m),” according to the team.
On the track, junior Francine Stevens tied the program record in the 300-meter dash with a first-place finish in 39.04 seconds. “On the track, junior Francine Stevens continued her standout start to the season by tying the program record in the 300-meter dash, finishing first in a time of 39.04,” stated Cornell.
In field events, Anika Sukumar achieved seventh place on Cornell’s all-time list for triple jump with a winning distance of 12.27 meters. “Cornell also saw a notable mark in the jumps, where Anika Sukumar moved into seventh place on the program’s all-time list in the triple jump with a winning effort of 12.27 meters,” reported officials.
Cornell athletes participated in every scheduled event at Saturday’s meet, which was their second competition of this indoor season. The team recorded strong results across sprints, middle-distance races, relays, hurdles and field events as they continue preparations for upcoming meets.
The Big Red will compete again next Saturday when they host the Upstate Challenge at Barton Hall.
