The Cornell women’s sailing team finished the first day of the ICSA Women’s Team Racing National Championship on April 26 with a 5-4 record, placing eighth overall and keeping their hopes alive for advancing to the final four. The event is taking place on Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans, hosted by Tulane University at the Southern Yacht Club.

With only one win separating Cornell from fourth place, five teams are within close range of each other as they head into Monday’s decisive races. This tight competition means that several teams still have a chance to secure a spot in the final rounds.

Cornell recorded wins against MIT, Charleston, Georgetown, Roger Williams, and St. Mary’s (Md.), while losing to Stanford and Yale—both undefeated—as well as Brown and Dartmouth. The team is led by Sophia Devling, Gilda Dondona, and Winborne Majette as skippers with crews Sophia Mulvania, Paulina Freyre, and Maya Conway rotating throughout the races. Four of Cornell’s last five races will be against teams currently ranked below them in the standings.

In another event over the weekend—the Admiral’s Cup held at Kings Point—Cornell placed tenth out of fourteen teams with a total of 251 points. Conditions included shifting light winds on Saturday followed by steadier northeast breezes on Sunday. In division results for this regatta: Adrianna D’Agati and Kate Constan took tenth place in A Division; Matthew Schmitt, Leopold Faerber, Maeve Katics, and Emil Damji rotated through B Division for ninth place.

The next round of racing will determine whether Cornell advances further in nationals as they aim to capitalize on matchups against lower-ranked opponents.
