The Cornell women’s sailing team won its fourth consecutive Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Women’s Team Race Championship with a perfect 16-0 record, according to an announcement on April 12. The victory at Georgetown grants the team an automatic berth to the national championship.
This achievement highlights Cornell’s ongoing dominance in conference competition. The Big Red swept all nine teams, defeating Georgetown in the final round after earlier victories over Navy, St. Mary’s (Md.), and Penn.
Key contributors included skippers Winborne Majette, Sophia Devling, Ava Gustafson, and Gilda Dondona, along with crews Ava Stevens, Maya Conway, Paulina Freyre, and Sophia Mulvania. Their strong starting positions and teamwork led to a decisive finish: “closing out the championship with a commanding 1-2-3 sweep of runner-up Georgetown in the final four to secure the title and extend its conference streak,” according to the release.
In addition to their success at Georgetown, Cornell also participated in Navy’s Truxtun Umsted regatta on the Severn River. Facing challenging wind conditions across two days of racing, Cornell finished 14th out of 18 teams with Marcus Greco and Adrianna D’Agati leading performances in their respective divisions.
Looking ahead, Cornell is scheduled to compete for the America Trophy—the MAISA open conference title—at St. Mary’s (Md.) on April 18-19.
