The Cornell women’s tennis team lost to Penn by a score of 4-1 on April 12 at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers in Philadelphia. The defeat dropped Cornell’s record to 7-11 overall and 0-5 in Ivy League play, while Penn improved to 11-10 and 2-3 in the conference.
This match is significant as it continues Cornell’s search for its first Ivy League win of the season. The team will look to end its campaign with two road matches next weekend against Dartmouth and Harvard.
Cornell started strong by winning the doubles point. Michelle Ryndin and Sage Loudon won at No. 1 doubles with a score of 6-4, while Martina Marica and Dylan Gelber secured a victory at No. 3 doubles with a score of 6-3. However, Penn responded during singles play by winning four matches: Varsha Vedula defeated Andrea Martinez De Los Rios at No. 5; Esha Velaga beat Ryndin at No.1; Lara Stojanovski overcame Victoria Zhao at No.2; and Maya Urata clinched the overall victory against Gelber at No.4.
Two singles matches were unfinished when the outcome was decided—Loudon had won her first set at No.3 singles, while Emma Baker was trailing in her match at No.6.
