The Cornell women’s tennis team will play against Rutgers on March 16 at the Livingston Tennis Center, following a rescheduled match due to a winter storm, according to a March 13 announcement.
This matchup is significant as Cornell aims to extend its current three-match winning streak. The Big Red holds a 6-5 record this season and recently finished sixth at the ECAC Indoor Championships. Their spring victories include wins over Buffalo and UConn, with their latest success coming from a comeback win against UConn after losing the doubles point.
Interim Carl H. Meinig ’31 Head Coach of Women’s Tennis Spencer Furman leads a lineup that has gained experience during the fall season, highlighted by performances at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships and Ivy League Conference Masters events. Key players include sophomore Sage Loudon, junior Michelle Ryndin, junior Victoria Zhao, sophomore Andrea Martinez de los Rios—who enters the week with a seven-match win streak—and freshman Dylan Gelber. Other contributors this spring are Martina Marica, Emma Baker, and Tanya Fan.
Rutgers comes into the contest with a 6-4 dual match record and is led by head coach Hilary Ritchie. Senior Mai Nguyen was named ITA Northeast Region Most Improved Player last year and currently plays in the top singles spot for Rutgers. Historically, Rutgers leads Cornell in their all-time series; however, both teams have split their eight meetings since 2000.
The Cornell Big Red Women’s Tennis team operates in Ithaca, N.Y., where it also plays its home matches according to the official website.
