Cornell wrestling competed in a series of tightly contested bouts on March 20 during the second day of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

The event is significant for Cornell as its athletes fought through both consolation and quarterfinal rounds, with several matches coming down to narrow margins. The tournament’s blood round, known for its intensity and high stakes, saw Cornell striving to secure All-America honors.

Tyler Ferrara began the afternoon at 133 pounds in the consolation bracket but was edged out by Iowa State’s Grice with an 8-6 decision. Vince Cornella followed at 141 pounds, losing a close match to Nebraska’s Hardy by a score of 5-3. In his next bout against Air Force’s Nogle during the blood round, Cornella was pinned, ending his run in the tournament.

At 149 pounds, freshman Jaxon Joy started strong against Stanford’s Valencia but ultimately lost a high-scoring quarterfinal match, 12-9. Joy then faced Virginia Tech’s Gaj in the blood round and was defeated 7-2. Meyer Shapiro competed at 157 pounds and after dropping a tight contest to West Virginia’s Watters (6-5), he rebounded with a decisive win over Stanford’s Cardenas (4-1) to clinch All-America honors for the third time in his career. Shapiro later lost to Illinois’ Webster and will compete for seventh place on Saturday.

Simon Ruiz had notable success at 174 pounds in the consolation bracket, defeating Northern Iowa’s Simma by fall and earning an 11-2 major decision over Virginia Tech’s Desiante before being eliminated by Ohio State’s Kharchla.

The competition resumes Saturday morning with medal matches scheduled before championship finals take place that evening. Friday’s results highlighted both hard-fought losses and key achievements for Cornell wrestlers as they continue their pursuit of national recognition.
