Eight members of the Cornell women’s fencing team were named to the United States Fencing Coaches Association All-Region teams, according to a March 9 announcement from the organization.
The recognition highlights the achievements of Cornell’s athletes during the NCAA Regional competitions, which took place on Sunday, March 8. The awards are determined based on individual results and field size at each regional event.
Senior Ketki Ketkar (epee), junior Samantha Marsee (saber), junior Isabela Carvalho (saber), and freshman Trisha Nath (saber) were selected for the All-Northeast First Team. Senior Nora Weber (epee) was named to the Second Team, while freshman Lana Lee (foil), senior Mia Jo (foil), and freshman Reya Ghayalod (saber) received Honorable Mention honors.
Ketkar is under consideration for the NCAA Championship after earning a silver medal at the NCAA Northeast Regional with a 10-1 record in the round of 12 at Vassar. She is also an Ivy League individual champion in epee and holds a season record of 51-16 with an .857 winning percentage in Ivy competition. Weber advanced to the round of 12 in epee as well, finishing her season with a 44-37 record.
Cornell made program history by placing four saber fencers—Marsee, Carvalho, Nath, and Ghayalod—in the finals at regionals for the first time in any weapon category. Marsee earned bronze with a 7-4 record in the round of 12; Carvalho placed fourth, Nath fifth, and Ghayalod eleventh. In foil, Lee led with a 69-41 overall record while Jo posted 52 wins in dual competition this season.
The official field for the NCAA Championship will be announced Tuesday, March 11. The championships are scheduled for March 19-22 at Notre Dame in South Bend.
