Junior Willem Firth scored five goals and senior Brian Luzzi added four as No. 6 Cornell defeated High Point 17-9 in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game at Schoellkopf Field on April 13.

The win brings Cornell’s record to 8-3, while High Point drops to 6-6. The result highlights the Big Red’s offensive depth, with ten different players contributing to the scoring.

Firth reached his season milestone of 35 goals after his final tally, recording eight shots on goal and three assists for a total of five points. Luzzi was effective with four goals from five shots on goal, including two during man-up opportunities, and contributed two assists. Ryan Goldstein also played a key role with three goals and two assists.

Cornell gained early control by scoring eight consecutive goals after conceding the game’s first point. Firth scored three times during this run. Although High Point narrowed the gap in the third quarter, Luzzi responded with four goals in that period to keep Cornell ahead.

Goalkeeper Matthew Tully made ten saves before being replaced by Tim Piacentini in the fourth quarter, who stopped four out of six shots faced. Jack Cascadden won fifteen out of twenty-three faceoffs and led the team with ten ground balls as Cornell collected thirty-eight ground balls compared to High Point’s twenty-nine.

Monday’s match marked only the second meeting between these teams, moving Cornell to a perfect record against High Point. Goldstein matched then surpassed his father Tim Goldstein for thirteenth place all-time in program points history and moved into tenth place for career assists at Cornell. Firth recorded his sixth game this season with at least five points and is now close to entering the top twenty-two all-time goal scorers for the program.

Head coach Connor Buczek achieved his sixtieth career win with this victory, becoming just the fifth coach in program history to reach that mark.

Cornell will return to Ivy League play against Dartmouth on Saturday, April 18.
