Four members of the Cornell Big Red wrestling team were named NCAA Division I Men’s Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, according to an April 2 announcement following the conclusion of the NCAA Championships in March.
The recognition highlights student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically. The honor is awarded annually after the NCAA Division I Men’s Wrestling Championships, which took place from March 19 to 21.
This year, senior Vince Cornella, junior Aiden Hanning, freshman Jaxon Joy, and junior Meyer Shapiro were among 390 student-athletes from 73 institutions recognized for their achievements during the collegiate wrestling season. Cornella, an Applied Economics and Management major, had a notable senior season with a 21-3 record at 141 pounds. He won the Ivy League title as the top seed and earned a No. 6 seed at the NCAA Championships. Cornella also secured victories over several ranked opponents throughout his season.
Hanning competed throughout his junior year in the SC Johnson College of Business and placed fourth at the Ivy League Championships while earning All-Ivy Academic honors. Joy finished his freshman campaign with a strong record of 26-3 and was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year after winning multiple awards including three Athlete of the Week honors and qualifying for nationals. Shapiro recorded an overall mark of 18-4 as he placed second at Ivies before finishing eighth at nationals to earn All-America honors for a third time; he was also named Ivy League Wrestler of the Year for a second consecutive season.
The NWCA Scholar All-American award recognizes student-athletes across collegiate wrestling who have demonstrated excellence both on their teams and in academics.
