Cornell began its outdoor track and field season at the UCF Knights Invite in Orlando on March 27, with junior Avery Hastings securing a runner-up finish in the hammer throw and several athletes achieving notable early-season results.
The event marked the start of the Big Red’s outdoor campaign, providing an opportunity for both experienced competitors and newcomers to establish their form. Freshman Lauren Smith made her collegiate debut in the javelin, finishing eighth with a throw of 40.07 meters. Head coach Mike Henderson called it “a great season opener,” adding that he was proud of Smith’s first performance at this level.
In other field events, junior Lauren Cashman earned third place in the pole vault by clearing 3.67 meters, which became Cornell’s first podium finish outdoors this year. Senior Paula-Marie Brown led three teammates in the long jump with a seventh-place result at 5.82 meters.
The highlight came from Hastings, who placed second in the hammer throw with a mark of 56.39 meters among strong competition. Freshman Gabriella Vizcarrondo also performed well by finishing ninth at 51.23 meters. Henderson described Hastings’ effort as “a strong performance…a great way to start the season.” Senior Nicole Loy contributed an eleventh-place finish in shot put with a distance of 13.60 meters.
On the track, junior Elise Sawyer finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.06 despite encountering difficulty on her final hurdle attempt; Henderson said she “struggled on the last hurdle but showed great promise for an outdoor season opener.” In sprinting events, sophomore Olivia Walters led nine Big Red runners in the crowded 200-meter dash field by placing twenty-third (24.29 seconds).
Competition is set to continue Saturday morning with men’s and women’s high jump events beginning at 10 a.m., and live results are available online.
