A high-water boating advisory has been issued for Seneca Lake, Cayuga Lake, and the Seneca Cayuga Canal, according to an April 6 announcement from local authorities.

The advisory comes as water levels have risen significantly in recent days, leading to hazardous conditions for boaters. Authorities say that high water has washed out private docks, hoists, and beaches along the lakes. In addition to these hazards, floating and submerged debris pose a risk to those navigating the waterways.

Seneca County Marine Patrol has been monitoring the situation over several days. They report that some areas have seen water rise over docks. Boaters are being urged to remain vigilant for debris on or below the surface of the water and are advised to reduce their speeds when traveling through affected areas.

As a safety reminder, officials note that New York State Navigation Law requires boats on Keuka Lake to travel at no more than five miles per hour within 200 feet of shore. This rule is intended to protect boaters from hidden obstructions that may be present near shorelines during periods of high water.

Authorities continue to monitor conditions on both lakes and the canal as they work to ensure public safety.
