Cornell University junior infielder Owen Carlson was named Ivy League Player of the Week on March 16 following his standout performance during the Big Red’s three-game series at Virginia Military Institute.
The recognition highlights Carlson’s contributions to Cornell baseball, as he led his team both offensively and defensively over the weekend. His achievements underscore his role in helping the Big Red compete in early season play.
Carlson went 6-for-10 at the plate, achieving a .600 batting average, drawing four walks, and scoring five runs without striking out in any of his 14 plate appearances. He posted a .714 on-base percentage and a .700 slugging percentage for a combined OPS of 1.414. His batting average was the highest among Ivy League players that weekend and ranked 23rd nationally, while his on-base percentage led all conference hitters and was 17th across Division I baseball.
In Saturday’s doubleheader opener, Carlson went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI, and two runs scored. Although he did not record a hit in Saturday’s second game, he drew two walks. On Sunday, he again went 3-for-4 and scored three of Cornell’s four runs. He tied teammate Luke Johnson for most hits (six) during the series and was one of four Cornell players to record an extra-base hit—all doubles. Defensively, Carlson maintained a perfect fielding percentage with seven putouts and five assists at second base.
So far this season, Carlson is hitting .365 with an on-base percentage of .443 and slugging .500 for an OPS of .943. He leads Cornell in runs scored (10), has one double, two home runs, nine RBI, eight walks drawn, and only five strikeouts.
Cornell will finish its season-opening road trip by starting Ivy League play against Princeton from March 21 to March 22 at Clarke Field in Princeton, New Jersey. The three-game series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday morning followed by Sunday’s finale. All games are scheduled to be streamed live.
