The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office announced on March 13 that investigators found what appeared to be several full-size sticks of dynamite and a live grenade at a home on Brewer Road in the Town of Waterloo. The discovery was made around 11:30 a.m.

Authorities said the incident prompted a response from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department’s Hazardous Device Squad, also known as the Bomb Squad, as well as Seneca County Sheriff’s Office K9 Frank, who is trained in explosive and bomb detection. The Bomb Squad safely removed the explosives from the residence, along with about 20 pounds of gun powder.

Sheriff Timothy Thompson said, “The suspicious incident was isolated to the residence and Investigators have determined that there was no direct threat to the community.”

Other agencies assisting in the investigation included members of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, North Seneca Ambulance, and Seneca County Department of Emergency Management.

Officials have not released further details about how or why the explosives were present at the location. The investigation remains ongoing.
