Cornell University announced on Apr. 13 that first-year infielder Sofia Hernandez has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week after her performances in recent games against Colgate and Dartmouth.
The recognition comes as Hernandez delivered a strong showing during a five-game stretch, helping the Big Red to a 3-2 record over the weekend. Her achievements included batting .538 with a .667 on-base percentage and a 1.897 OPS. Notably, she matched the Ivy League’s single-game record by hitting three home runs in one road game against Dartmouth.
Hernandez hit safely in all five games, collecting five runs batted in, scoring six times, and drawing seven walks without striking out. In the series win at Dartmouth, she went 5-for-9 at bat with five walks and six runs scored. During Saturday’s doubleheader opener, she was perfect at the plate—going 3-for-3 with three home runs and four RBI—and hit what became the winning home run in the seventh inning when the score was tied at seven.
In game two of that doubleheader, Hernandez contributed further by drawing a walk and scoring during extra innings to help secure another victory for Cornell. She continued her consistent play through Sunday’s high-scoring loss to Dartmouth and had earlier contributed two hits and two walks during a split doubleheader against Colgate earlier in the week. Defensively, Hernandez handled all 22 fielding chances successfully over these contests.
The Cornell softball team is scheduled to play next on Tuesday, April 14th against Niagara University at Niemand-Robison Field. The doubleheader will begin at 2:30 p.m., with coverage available on ESPN+.
