County Historian Offers Tips for Preserving Photos

GENESEO, N.Y., September 7, 2022 – Preserving history is an important means to transmit our understanding of the past to future generations.  In doing so, it connects people to certain times, places and events that were significant milestones in our collective past. September is Save Your Photos Month and the Livingston County Historian’s Office has some tips to help with preserving your own personal history.

Here are some steps you can take to preserve old and new family photos:

  1. Back up digital photos to an external drive, cloud service or print them out.
  2. Label recent photographs – you know who, what and where, but future generations may not.
  3. Label old family photos as best you can. Connect with family members who can help identify the people and places. Use a pencil to label if possible.
  4. Scan photos to create a backup copy.
  5. If you are cleaning out photographs or other collections, contact the County Historian. Your items may be a perfect fit for the County Archives and will help future researchers.
