Assemblyman John Lemondes (R,C-LaFayette) has successfully pushed for increased funding for the Finger Lakes-Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance (FLLOWPA) in the final state budget. Lemondes, along with his colleagues, sent a letter to Speaker Carl Heastie last month asking for $3.5 million in state funds to be allocated for FLLOWPA in the state budget, a $750,000 increase.
FLLOWPA is a time-tested organization that plays a critical role in the protection of New York’s freshwater resources in the Finger Lakes region. These added funds will help the Alliance retain its workforce and keep up with the rising cost of supplies and materials as a result of inflation.
In a statement, Lemondes emphasized the importance of this funding, stating, "I’m proud to have been able to secure this vital funding for our freshwater resources. While I’ve been adamant the state budget has its fair share of shortcomings, this is a step in the right direction for environmental conservation and businesses across Central New York."
Lemondes also highlighted the broader impact of this funding, saying, "I hope the inclusion of this funding will bring more awareness to this issue in the Finger Lakes region as I continue to work with my colleagues in the state Assembly to make sure these resources are protected for generations to come."
While the finished state budget includes many instances of wasteful and reckless spending, the inclusion of this funding is seen as a positive step forward. Lemondes views this as a victory for Central New York, not just in terms of environmental conservation but also in job creation and economic development in the region.
