Assemblyman John Lemondes (R,C-LaFayette) attended a driving safety event at Auburn High School, emphasizing the importance of educating young drivers on the dangers of driving while intoxicated. The event, organized by the Auburn Police Department, aimed to raise awareness about the risks associated with impaired driving among high school students.
Quoting statistics from the state police, it was highlighted that underage impaired driving has been on the rise, with over 5,000 drivers under 21 being arrested for DWI last year. Additionally, drunk drivers as a whole contribute to more than 17,000 deaths annually, translating to 310 funerals per week or one DWI-related death every 30 minutes. Motor vehicle crashes stand as the leading cause of death for 15- to 20-year-olds, accounting for 14% of all fatal crashes.
Lemondes stressed the significance of events like the one held at Auburn High School in ensuring the safety and responsibility of underage drivers. He stated, “It seems as if every time you turn on the news, there’s another story about the consequences of underage drinking and driving. As parents, teachers, and students, it's time for us to say enough is enough. Events like this are so important for making sure young people have resources and tools at their disposal so they will not find themselves in these dangerous situations."
The assemblyman expressed his gratitude towards the Auburn Police Department, Auburn Fire Department, and Auburn High School for organizing the event and prioritizing the safety of students. Lemondes commended their efforts in providing valuable resources and guidance to prevent young individuals from engaging in risky behaviors behind the wheel.
