Assemblyman John Lemondes has announced that several local libraries will receive state aid for construction. The Tully Free Library, Layfayette Public Library, Fairmount Community Library, Weedsport Free Library, and Port Byron Library are among the beneficiaries. These funds are part of a $34 million allocation in the FY2023-2024 State Budget aimed at public library construction and broadband infrastructure projects.

The funds are intended to help these libraries update their facilities. Many public libraries in New York require renovations, with a recent survey highlighting a need for projects totaling over $1.75 billion. More than half of New York's 1,000 public library buildings are over 60 years old, while another third have been standing for more than 30 years.

Challenges faced by these libraries include accommodating users with disabilities, energy inefficiency, and outdated electrical wiring that hampers internet and technology access. There is also a lack of space to house growing collections and provide adequate meeting areas or public access computers.

Eligible activities for funding under the State Aid for Library Construction Program include building new library facilities, adding to existing structures, and renovating current spaces.

Assemblyman Lemondes expressed his satisfaction with the program: "One of the best parts of being in the state Assembly is finding ways to give back to the community and the SAM/CREST Grant Funding program does just that," he stated. He added that these funds would assist long-standing district cornerstones in making essential upgrades. "I’m proud to have been able to secure this funding and I look forward to seeing the impact these grants will have on the community in the future."
