Senator Helming recently awarded Raymond "Ray" Welker Jr. of Walworth with a New York State Senate Commendation Award, acknowledging his 70 years of service with the West Walworth Volunteer Fire Department. The award ceremony was held during the department's annual banquet, marking its 78 years of community service.
Ray joined the volunteer firefighters at age 18, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. His family continues this tradition; his sons Lawrence and Thomas, grandson Joshua, daughter-in-law Brenda, and granddaughters Felica and Brenna are all involved with the fire department or Ladies Auxiliary.
In 2024, Ray responded to 87 percent of fire calls for West Walworth, maintaining an active role in the team. Senator Helming stated, “It is a privilege to recognize Ray for this remarkable milestone of continued community service. For 70 years, Ray has not only been a mentor and friend but also an inspiration to his family and future generations who embrace the tradition of volunteer fire service. It is truly an honor to present him with a New York State Senate Commendation Award.”
