Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan has expressed support for his colleagues in both the Assembly and Senate, emphasizing the urgent necessity for stronger involuntary commitment laws. This stance comes after a violent event in Brooklyn, where four young girls were stabbed by a family member with a reported history of mental illness.
Gallahan advocates for preventive measures from the state to safeguard the public and ensure those experiencing severe mental health challenges receive appropriate care and treatment. According to Gallahan, there is a need to protect communities from individuals who have demonstrated they pose a direct threat to public safety.
"The incident that occurred in Brooklyn should not have happened—had stronger involuntary commitment laws been in place to get individuals with histories of severe or violent mental health disorders off the streets and into treatment, this incident could have been prevented," he said. Gallahan endorses the mission of his colleagues to put the safety of New Yorkers first by advocating for stronger laws.
