Thompson Health will host a free program focused on preventing falls, scheduled for November 19 at the Sands Family YMCA in Canandaigua. The session, titled “Falls Prevention: Prepare to Prevent,” will be led by physical therapist Parker Drumm and begins at 12:30 p.m. in the YMCA’s Community Room.
During the event, attendees will learn about how fear of falling can lead to social isolation, the importance of medical providers in evaluating fall risk, and how physical therapists address these risks. The program also includes applying this knowledge to real patient stories to help determine suitable actions.
Drumm is board certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists in both neurologic and geriatric physical therapy. He has more than ten years of experience at Thompson Health and serves as an adjunct professor at Nazareth University Neuromuscular Clinic.
“Understand how social isolation occurs due to the fear of falling,” Drumm stated. “Review the role of medical providers in assessing the risk for falls. Understand the physical therapist’s role in addressing risks for falls. Apply learned information to patients’ stories to determine the appropriate course of action.”
