UR Medicine Thompson Health is marking National Donate Life Month by raising a Donate Life flag at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua on April 8. The flag will remain displayed outside the Constellation Center for Health and Healing through April 30 as part of efforts to encourage community members to consider joining the New York State Donate Life Registry.

The initiative aims to highlight the ongoing need for organ, eye, and tissue donors in New York State. By participating in this campaign, Thompson Health seeks to inform the public about how one donor can make a significant difference.

As part of its awareness activities, hospital staff will host an information table outside the cafeteria on April 10, which coincides with Donate Life Blue & Green Day—a national observance encouraging people to wear blue and green in support of organ donation. Throughout April, Thompson Health is also sharing stories from associates whose lives have been affected by organ donation on its website.

According to Donate Life New York State, more than 8,000 state residents are currently waiting for an organ transplant nationwide. The organization notes that one donor can save up to eight lives and improve up to 75 others through eye and tissue donations.

The federal Health Resources & Services Administration says living donors may give a kidney or a portion of their liver or other organs while still alive.

By raising awareness during National Donate Life Month, Thompson Health hopes more individuals will consider registering as donors or learning about living donation options.
