UR Medicine Thompson Health in Canandaigua has once again received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care. This certification is a recognition of the hospital’s ongoing adherence to performance standards, marking its continued excellence in providing perinatal care.
The Joint Commission, a nonprofit organization dedicated to quality improvement and patient safety, awarded this certification. Thompson Health first received it in 2023. The certification acknowledges the hospital’s integrated, coordinated, and patient-centered approach to prenatal through postpartum care. This includes management of both complicated and uncomplicated pregnancies, guided by established standards and guidelines.
In 2024, nearly 800 babies were born at Thompson Health. The hospital’s recertification followed a rigorous site visit in April of this year. During the unannounced visit, staff received praise for high breastfeeding rates and low C-section rates among first-time mothers.
This designation is provided in partnership with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. When initially certified, Thompson was one of only two hospitals in New York State to receive this recognition.
“We greatly appreciate the efforts of all our Birthing Center associates and providers,” stated President/CEO Michael F. Stapleton, Jr., adding specific gratitude to “Director of Obstetrical Nursing KyShara Penns and Dr. Francis Finneran for their exceptional leadership.”
